2018 U.S. Open Club Championships – YCC Girls Day One Recap

U-20

Last year’s finalists seem poised for a rematch after the first day of pool play in the U-20 girls’ division at the 2018 U.S. Open. Reigning champions, the Triangle Warhawks, went 2-0 on the first day of pool play and Seattle started the tournament with two comfortable wins as they seek to avenge their first-ever non-gold-medal performance from 2017. Several other teams are set to challenge for the title after their opening matches. Texas Tango sits atop Pool B after defeating Utah Swarm and Valley Ultimate. Pool D features the fourth- and fifth-seeded Cincinnati Belle and Boston BUDA, respectively, both sitting at 2-0, who are both vying for the top seed in the hotly contested pool.

California Current, the lowest seed in the division, had two statement wins as they roared through Pool A, edging out Colorado Cutthroat and cATLanta. The upstart California side will take on the juggernaut Warhawks in a game for the top spot in Pool A. Quebec Aéra and Utah Swarm also pulled off upsets over D.C. Rogue and Minnesota Superior, respectively, putting themselves in a position to snag the second seed in their pools.

Rain and wind during the first game of the day led to sloppy play, and upwind breaks were the deciding factor in most games. Teams that could rely on consistent play from their handlers found success as marathon points wore on. While tomorrow’s weather is forecast to be more pleasant, consistency is the name of the game as the powerhouses of the U-20 girls’ division continue on a collision course.

U-17

One of the most exciting aspects of YCC is the nearly guaranteed parity at every level of the tournament. Blustery and, at times windy conditions, made sure that we’d see our share of interesting results in the U-17 girls’ division.

The stories of the day were the impending match ups between the 2-0 powerhouses leading each pool. In Pool A, D.C. Force sits in first place  with two easy 10-5 wins over Bay Area Belly of the Beast and Atlanta rATLers. Seattle holds the other 2-0 spot in the pool, after sneaking out a close victory over Portland Rip Tide. In Pool B, Cincinnati Belle and the Triangle Area Kitty Hawks stand poised to collide tomorrow after wins over Boston BUDA and Minnesota Superior. The final round of pool play games in the five-team Pool A will determine which team misses out on bracket play.
